Poechenelles contestataires !

The origin of the puppet theatre in Brussels is a typical story about Brussels and protest. Indeed, the “poechenelles” (polichinelles) appeared following the closure by Philippe II of Spain of Brussels’ theatres, hotbeds of opposition to his reign. The inhabitants of Brussels decided to replace the actors by puppets in clandestine theatres. On the strength of this heritage of protest, the Théâtre royal de Toone is offering a programme based on the Belgian revolution. An exhibition, conferences and, of course, the presentation throughout the year of La révolution belge de 1830. In this colourful patriotic fresco, Woltje, the ketje of Brussels, leads the revolutionaries in the battle, while Saint Michael and his devil tumble from the tower of City Hall in order to help with the fighting.
